Heritage Wardens’ report October 2009
- Developing a Heritage Trail for Coleorton:
There is still a great deal of work and research to be carried out with this project. We are at the initial stage of identifying all of the points of interest which could be included in the trail/trails.
- Coleorton Heritage Group:
This group is now meeting on a regular basis. The main objective at this stage is to interview the long standing residents of Coleorton and record their memories of village life. We are hoping this will also yield a collection of interesting photographs
- Progress on feasibility for Coleorton Wood:
The sale of Coleorton Wood appears to have come to a standstill. Elaine Derrick informed me that she was awaiting letters from her director to send out to interested parties, and she was hoping to send these out “before Christmas” There is still no apparent interest in New Lount Reserve.
- Collecting and collating Census information for Coleorton:
I have now completed the 1861 census information and have started on 1871 (Census info for 1841, 1851 & 1861 is available on the web site)
- Working with Ashby Museum on John Crocker material and research into the history of Coleorton:
The material is now being categorised and will then be catalogued over the coming months.
- Discussing a display board for Coleorton in Ashby Museum.
The only outstanding item for this display is the illustration of Tudor Mining, which I am chasing. Once I have this I can submit the details to Ashby Museum to get the display board produced. I will check with Ashby Museum what is required in terms of the support that was offered by the Parish Council (approximately £300.00)
- War Memorial Project:
This project is ongoing and I am continuing to collect information on those individuals listed on the war memorial. The pilot project is due to end in December and I have most of the information required to complete the forms involved. LCC’s Historic Buildings Dept. are coming to Coleorton on Monday 2 November to take a look at the war memorial so that we can assess what repairs are required, and what they might cost. We will then need to consider where we might obtain the money for these repairs (if the Parish Council decide that the repairs should be carried out) I still have not found any parishioners who have died in armed conflict since 1945.
