Heritage Wardens’ ReportOctober 20111. Coleorton 2000 Committee
The heritage leaflets have now been distributed and copies can be obtained from several establishments in the village. Whilst the leaflets are free the Coleorton 2000 Committee would appreciate donations so that it is able to continue with its heritage conservation work. A copy of the map and the full leaflet can also be downloaded from the Parish Website. A copy of the map and the full leaflet can be downloaded from here >> A small number of photographs have been placed on the website. Please do take a look at these photographs and help the group to identify those people in them. If you have any old photographs of the village, or people from the village, please contact the group, they would like to be able to add more photographs to the archive. Members of the group have attended the training for this interesting project to record the heritage of words and speech in the village. It is hoped that the project will start later in the year. The Parish Council have agreed to replace the plaque which commemorates the generous donation of land for the Millennium Garden by the family of Ken Cull of Colliery Farm. The group has also discussed getting other groups involved with organising a village event for The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations next year. 2. Communal Bake HouseThe Coleorton 2000 Committee has made significant progress with the restoration work on the bakehouse. The majority of the brickwork is now rebuilt and most of roof timbers have been located. The group is still looking for about 200 roof tiles to enable it to complete the roof. If you know of a source where these tiles can be obtained please do contact the group. 3. Lount Housing DevelopmentThe application for planning permission is currently being progressed through NWLDC’s planning process. We are in contact with LCC’s Historic Environment Record Officer who will monitor the historical conservation work required by the builders. If any further excavation work is carried out we are expecting to be kept informed. If anyone has information on the former Coleorton Pottery which stood on this site please contact the Heritage Wardens. 4. Ravenstone HospitalAs part of the grant awarded to Ravenstone Hospital Trust for their 300th Centenary they have funds to produce a book on the history of the Hospital. We have been asked to assist with information relating to both John Wilkins, who founded the hospital, and the history of mining in the area. If anyone can contribute information about these two topics please contact the Heritage wardens. 5. New History Group at Newbold.A new Local History Group has been formed in Newbold to research the extensive local heritage of the village. If you would be interested in joining this group or require further information contact the Heritage Wardens. John Macdonald (October 2011) |
