Coleorton Heritage Group.
The group is now meeting on a regular basis and has two main objectives:-
- We have been interviewing long time residents of Coleorton and collecting both memories and points of interest. This information is now being compiled into a heritage archive.
- Collecting details on Lower Moor area. We are focusing on this specific area and would be interested in any detail that individuals may have. We have identified the properties that have been in this area for over 150 years and also those properties that have been lost during the same period.
The numbers of this group is growing and if you are interested in joining us do contact us through the website.
Progress on Coleorton Wood.
In a recent conversation with LLC we understand that we will soon be told the outcome to sell Coleorton Wood. Coleorton Parish Council has shown an interest, but at this stage we do not know if they have been successful.
LCC are also hoping to sell New Lount Reserve and we understand that this will be advertised in the near future. The heritage group are talking to the LCC rangers to see if there is any way in which we can assist with these two local facilities.
Collecting and collating Census information for Coleorton.
I am making slow progress on 1871.
Ashby Museum and The John Crocker Material.
This mountain of valuable heritage material has now been sorted into categories and there are now three of us starting on the long process of cataloguing the material. If any local historians are interested in researching this archive they should visit Ashby Museum.
Display board for Coleorton in Ashby Museum.
This board has now been completed and can now be seen in the museum. The Parish Council has assisted with the cost of this display board and there will be a publicity event to commemorate this. Between the dates 8th March and 5th April 2010 Ashby Museum intend to run a special exhibition on the topic of “Coleorton and The Beaumont’s”. The museum will combine the opening of this exhibition and the new display board into a single publicity event.
War Memorial Project.
We are continuing to collect biographical information on those individuals listed on the war memorial; to date we have completed 15 out of 24 for WW1 and there are 5 from WW2 to do. We would appreciate any details anyone has on any of the individuals listed on the war memorial. We are also very interested in establishing exactly when the war memorial was relocated to its current position.
Repairs
The Parish Council has agreed to fund the repair of the war memorial and it is hoped that this work will be carried out over the next two months.
Missing Names.
There are four names which theoretically should be on the Coleorton War Memorial. We have the detail of these four, and three are remembered on other war memorials (Methodist Church and St George’s Church). The fourth name could have been remembered on the Griffydam Methodist Chapel, but this has been closed for some time now. If anyone has any detail on the names that are remembered in the Griffydam Methodist Chapel we would be very interested to hear from you.
