Heritage Wardens’ report September 2009
- Developing a Heritage Trail for Coleorton.
We have been working closely with Bill Platts and other local people on this project and are amassing a considerable list of items with a significant heritage interest. We have divided these items into four main categories:- a) Mining, Brickworks & Pipeworks together with associated railways and tramways. b) Other Industries of Coleorton. c) Farming in Coleorton. d) Other points of interest, Coleorton Hall Estate, Pubs, etc. The main task now is to carryout the research on all of these heritage areas. If anyone has any information that they consider will be of interest, please get in contact.
- Coleorton Heritage Group.
Rob has contacted 10 local people who have a keen interest in village heritage and we have now had two meetings to discuss Coleorton Heritage. This group is drawing up a list of the long term residents of Coleorton with a view of collecting memories and other information from them. We are particularly interested in memories of how village life was, and if anyone has photographs that we could copy we would be very pleased to hear from you. One of the objectives would be to build a photographic archive of Coleorton. Of course, if you would like to join the group, please do contact us.
- Coleorton Wood & New Lount Nature Reserve.
These two sites are currently owned and managed by Leicestershire County Council, who are intending to sell them. Both are important heritage sites for Coleorton, both from a natural history and an historic viewpoint. We are working with both the Parish Council and the County Council to make sure that these valuable village facilities remain available to the public.
- Collecting and collating Census information for Coleorton.
We are collating the census information for the village, and to date we have completed the years 1841 and 1851. This information will be placed on this website so that those interested in local family history can have access to this information. There is a great deal of work involved with this project and if anyone would like to help with the collating work, do please contact us.
- Ashby Museum and The John Crocker Collection.
John was a local historian who had a particular interest in both Coleorton and The Beaumont Family. Following his death his wife deposited his work with Ashby Museum and we have been assisting Ashby Museum to sort the massive amount of information that John had collected. The initial sort is now complete and the next stage will be to categorise and catalogue the information.
- Display board for Coleorton in Ashby Museum.
Ashby Museum has asked us to develop a display board on Coleorton Village, which will be permanently located in the museum. We have an outline of what will be included on this display. If anyone has information on any of the following we would be very interested to hear from them:-
- The Almshouses.
- The Fish Ponds.
- The George Inn.
- War Memorial Project.
We are taking part in Leicestershire County Council’s pilot scheme to document War Memorials, and to date we have collected all of the names from the war memorial in Ashby Road and from the Methodist Chapel. We are attempting to build a small biography on each of the individuals on these war memorials (both WW1 & WW2) so if you have any details on any of the individuals do please contact us. We are also attempting to collect details on any Coleorton people that have lost their live in armed conflict since 1945. If you know of any local individuals that have lost their lives in the services do please get in contact. email the Heritage Wardens >>
